Paul Michael Stephani
Paul was born on September 8. 1944 in Austin, Minnesota. He grew up in a very religious home and he felt really pressured to also be religious. He married Beverly Liter and later they divorced. While they were married, they had one daughter.
On december 31. 1980, Karen potak was walking outside of a bar when Paul noticed that she wasn’t wearing a jacket. He then invited her inside of his car to warm up. She gets in the car. Paul pulled out a tire iron and started hitting Karen with it. Three hours after the attack, the police received a strange phone call from a man whimpering and telling them to send a squad to Pierce Butler Road, because there was a hurt girl there. He also said that it was him that had hurt her, but didn’t give up his identity. Karen survived, but didn’t have any memory of him. Later when he was interrogated by the police, he first said that he had hit her 40 times, but later changed it to ten. In the end of the interrogation he said that after he had hit her many times, he finally came to his senses and realised that maybe he was hurting her.
His second attack took place on june 3. 1981. Paul walked in to a diner and started having a conversation with an eighteen-year-old girl, named Kimberly Kompton, who recently came into town. He asked her if he could show her around the town, she agreed. He brought her to a riverside. He pushed her to the ground and started stabbing her with an ice pick. She was stabbed over 40 times. He then called the police, whimpering again saying almost the same thing as he said last time.
A little over a year later, the police found the mutilated body of Barbara Simmons in the Minneapolis river. She was stabbed to death and two days later the police received another call. This time Paul tells the police that he’s sorry and that he was also responsible for the murder of Kimberly Kompton.
After the second call, the police named him the “Weepy-Voiced Killer” because he was always whimpering when he called the police. Later when Paul read the newspaper and saw that some facts about his murders were wrong, he called them and told them what really happened.
The police was starting to put the pieces together with the help of a waitress from a local bar who identified Paul as the last person to be seen with Barbara Simmons. The police had found out that paul had been fired in 1977 from his job as a janitor at the Malburg Manufacturing Plant, which is where Karen Potak’s body was found. The police also started monitoring Paul’s activity at this time.
On august 21. 1982, Paul invited Denise Williams to his apartment. After a while, she was going to leave. Paul offered to drive her. Instead of driving her home, he drove down a dark and empty road. Paul stopped at the side of the road and proceeded to stab her in the stomach with a screwdriver. She managed to grab a glass bottle that was laying on the floor and then smashed it on his head. She opened the car door and got out. Paul managed to do the same and he jumped on top of her and continued stabbing her several times. She was screaming for help and a man that was living close by, came running towards them. He fought Paul off of her, but Paul got in his car and drove away. Denise got to the hospital and survived. At that time, Paul had gotten home and realised that he was hurt. He called for an ambulance, but they recognized his voice and sent the police to him. He was arrested. He died just a few years later from skin cancer. Before he died, he admitted that he was the “Weepy-Voiced killer” and that he had killed many more people than what the police had found out.
